User Centred Design

User Centred Design

User centred design (UCD) is the approach that places the needs, wants and limitations of a website or system user are placed at the heart of the design process.

UCD promotes consideration of human factors and usage at all stages of the design process, encouraging designers to understand clearly a system user’s tasks and goals, making a system more usable by considering visibility, accessibility, legibility and language.

In order to understand better what a user might want to get from a system and under what circumstances we develop ‘personas’ and ‘scenarios’ to help us understand the ‘use cases’.

Usability testing is performed at key stages in the project, by clients and (ideally) prospective users. Testing wireframes is a cost effective way of gaining valuable user input prior to development.

User centred design and testing produce systems that are more usable and used.
